Right: Picking up the the brush. During the dormant season (late fall and throughout winter), I prune each tree with a pair of loppers (pruning shears) and a chain saw, while Jennifer (my wife) collects and stacks the brush. Oren (our 7 year old son) earns a little money by pitching in on the weekends. Orchard work is very physically demanding. However, the results of our effort (left picture), and all the positive feedback we receive from our customers, make it a rewarding lifestyle.
Most of the premium commercially packed cherries are slated for the Asian markets where the highest prices can be fetched. Hence, the mediocre cherries are usually dumped onto the domestic market. Most Americans living far from cherry growing regions, don't even know how delicious a cherry can be.
You have the option of buying cherries of comparable quality from a high end, well established online fruit vendor for a premium price (about $39.95 for two pounds dark red (bing) cherries or $49.95 for two pounds of Rainier cherries plus shipping).
However, we can provide you with cherries that are at least as good as theirs for about 1/3 of what they charge (including shipping).
Why? We are not a large outfit with many levels of management. We are the owners of small family orchards trying to sustain the livelihood we cherish.
All of our marketing is conducted online using the efficiency of internet technology thus allowing us to keeping our marketing budget to a bare minimum.
We work hard and take pride in growing the highest quality cherries "this land can produce". We did not buy into the "big is better" mindset. Our farms are small enough to micro-manage thus maximizing the percentage of very large and firm cherries.
We are also coordinating the harvest dates with our customers, other small growers we buy from, a small packing warehouse, and FedEx in order to expedite the delivery process thus ensuring our customers not only the meatiest and crunchiest sweet cherries "this land can provide", but also the freshest sweet cherries "this land can provide".
